e do futuro.
Science Education is essential to answer and minimize global and local challenges of the present and future. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure a quality training for Biology and Geology teachers, both in Portugal and worldwide. This chapter presents the results and conclusions of a documental analysis made to 39 pedagogical internship reports produced between 2009 and 2019, by (upcoming) teachers of Biology and Geology, within the scope of the Master in “Teaching of Biology and Geology in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education” of the University of Coimbra. These reports can be considered as a central training space in the professional development of a teacher. Thus, from a global perspective of the work developed by the University of Coimbra in the area of training future teachers of Biology and Geology, over a decade, the content analysis was decisive for the identification of factors that define the school of thought and the curricular identity. This analysis was based on three dimensions: 1) Area(s) of sustaining knowledge(s) (title and keywords); 2) Science teaching strategies and approaches (summary, methodology and objectives), and 3) Professional development (abstract and conclusions). The results revealed that the student’s formation at the University of Coimbra stands out for its exemplary preparation at the level of specific knowledge (dimension 1); there is still little use of the “Gowin’s V” report during the internship, despite the strong investment in this strategy in terms of the master's curricular units (dimension 2). There was also a great importance attributed to the pedagogical internship by the students, as a way to begin their development process in teaching practice (dimension 3). Starting from the problematizations of the emerging results, specific questions are presented in the scope of Science Education, namely about the close relationship between the initial training of teachers and the need to diversify and communicate science. By this way, we seek to contribute to transform the world through the teaching of Natural Sciences, in a society of justice and equality where no one is left behind. |
