(2008-2011). The northern region of Portugal has about 47% of manufacturing industries in Portugal, despite representing only 23% of the national land area. This region is characterized by industrial economic strength of the "traditional", such as textiles, footwear, clothing, wood and furniture, cork and metalworking. This work intended to evaluate the impact of the econcomic and financial recession had on the atmospheric emissions from the industries of this region, particularly in the most representative and also to correlate these facts with the indicators of economic activity. This analysis was based on results obtained through the self-monitoring atmospheric emissions, using a group of preselected industries for the period 2006-2011. Pollutant emission data was processed and analyzed in terms of annual average values by sector of activity and the average annual emissions by pollutant. The pollutants studied were: CO, VOC, NOx, SO2 and TSP. The first analysis did not allow any conclusion to draw is common to all sectors of activity analyzed. However, some of the sectors with the largest representation in the Region (textile, energy and smelting), shows considerable reductions in emissions. Meanwhile, the average annual emissions identified a positive correlation between economic recession period and the reduction of emissions of VOC, NOx and SO2. Moreover, a further analysis of air quality data from a station industrial influence was performed This analysis allowed us to identify that the economic crisis period was followed by a decrease on the annual concentration values of the various air pollutants in ambient air. |
