Resumo: In the old city centre of Coimbra, seismic evaluation of buildings corresponding to different construction typologies and ages were carried out using a simplified method, based on the seismic vulnerability index, broadly explored and applied in other European countries, mainly in Italy. Most of these buildings are load-bearing lime-stone masonry wall structures with wooden floor slabs. The seismic vulnerability of an old building depends on several factors, such as: configuration in plan and elevation, structural system, materials, diaphragms stiffness, etc. The evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of old buildings is essential in the definition of strengthening requirements in order to minimise damages due to eventual seismic actions. The method used is based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative parameters, each one with a proper weight. The vulnerability index is defined as the weighted sum of these parameters. The definition of the global vulnerability index allows the estimation of damage levels for a specific seismic hazard. Taking into account and awareness our seismic national risk, vulnerability evaluation for older buildings, is essential in the safeguarding of built heritage and on the identification of critical buildings and city areas through seismic risk maps. In this paper, it will be presented the results of the vulnerability assessment of buildings in the old city centre of Coimbra. The advantages and limitations on the adopted method, as well as its applicability are discussed.
