Abstract: | No seu célebre Principia Mathematica, publicado em 1687, Isaac Newton
qual pretendemos minimizar.
nenhuma extremal: nenhuma função satisfaz as condições necessárias
In the celebrated Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, Isaac Newton propose what is now called the Newton's problem of minimal resistance. Along this dissertation we dedicate our attention to the study of the formulation and resolution of this problem in agreement with calculus of variations and optimal control. We start by finding the integral functional that represents the total resistance of Newton's body which we want to minimize. We then proceed to present the classical mathematical formulation of Newton's problem in agreement with the theory of the calculus of variations, and we show that this mathematical problem fails to satisfy all the classical necessary optimality conditions. We conclude that the classical mathematical formulation of Newton's problem has no solution, and is not well posed. Next, we present the correct formulation for Newton's problem of minimal resistance, which is an optimal control problem. We show that one can easily solve it with the help of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle - the main result of optimal control theory - and present it's solution. We finish giving some references to recent works on Newton-type problems of minimal resistance and pointing out some directions of current investigation. |
