“Presos pelo Santo Ofício”. O destino dos bens de cristãos-novos da comunidade de Leiria

Abstract

Neste estudo, o autor analisa e documenta a questão do impacto das prisões de cristãos-novos da comunidade de Leiria pelo Tribunal do Santo Ofício, tanto em termos económicos, como no campo da memória social em torno do acontecimento local que era a prisão do “cristão-novo”. Nalguma documentação leiriense, notarial, conventual e de arquivos de antigas famílias, dos séculos xvi e xvii, distinta da que habitualmente se conserva nos acervos oficiais do arquivo do Santo Ofício, preservado na Torre do Tombo, surgem, efetivamente, referências aos membros desta comunidade, dando testemunho da sua participação na vida quotidiana da cidade ou revelando o destino dos seus bens materiais, quando detidos pela Inquisição, por norma vendidos na praça pública, em leilões, permitindo a transferência e a acumulação desse património por parte das aristocracias cristãs-velhas leirienses.

In this study, the author analyzes and documents the issue of the impact of the arrests of New Christians from the community of Leiria by the Tribunal do Santo Ofício, both in economic terms and in the field of social memory around the local event that was the prison of “New Christian“. In some documents from Leiria, notarial, monastic and from archives of old families, from the 16th and 17th centuries, different from what is usually preserved in the official collections of the Santo Ofício archive, preserved in Torre do Tombo, there are indeed references to members of this community, giving witness to their participation in the daily life of the city or revealing the fate of their material goods, when held by the Inquisition, usually sold in the public square, at auctions, allowing the transfer and accumulation of their lands by the local Old Christian aristocracies.
