A Inquisição de Goa e o delito de judaísmo (1561-1732)

Abstract

De entre os tribunais portugueses do Santo Ofício, a Inquisição de Goa foi a única cujo arquivo foi deliberadamente destruído. As limitações que esta circunstância impõe à investigação histórica sobre este tribunal atingem as mais variadas facetas da sua anterior actividade judicial. Este artigo pretende ser um primeiro contributo para colmatar as muitas incertezas relativamente à vigilância inquisitorial sobre uma das tipologias de réus que, sobretudo nos começos do Santo Ofício em Goa, mais preocupou o tribunal: os cristãos- -novos. A partir do cruzamento sistemático da documentação enviada a Lisboa pela Inquisição de Goa – em especial o reportório de João Delgado Figueira e as listas de autos-da-fé –, o objectivo deste artigo é o de reconstituir o universo de cristãos-novos processados por delito de judaísmo pelo tribunal, bem como o de compreender ritmos persecutórios, perfis sociais dos condenados e atitudes colectivas face aos cristãos-novos no Estado da Índia.

The Inquisition of Goa was the only Portuguese court of the Holy Office whose archives were deliberately destroyed, and this has hampered historical research on the diverse facets of this court’s judicial activity. This article seeks to conduct an analysis of the inquisitorial vigilance deployed for one of the court’s key categories of defendant, the New Christians, who were subject to particular scrutiny, especially in the early days of the Holy Office in Goa. Through a systematic cross-referenced analysis of the documentation that the Goa Inquisition sent to Lisbon – especially the Reportorio compiled by João Delgado Figueira and the lists of autos-da-fé – this article reconstructs the social sphere of the New Christians prosecuted by the Goa court for the crime of Judaism. It also sheds new light on the rate of persecutions, the social profiles of those convicted and social attitudes towards the New Christians in the Estado da Índia.
