superiores a 10GHz.
banda. [...] In this thesis we study and develop high sensitivity optical receivers for applications that require bandwidths in excess of 10GHz. We begin by reviewing classical optical receivers for low and moderate bitrates. These receivers are of three types: high impedance, transimpedance and low impedance. We also examine the various mechanisms by which present day technology limits the frequency response, bandwidth and noise of these receivers. For higher bitrates the receivers employ amplifiers after the photodiode that are designed using one of three main approaches: the HEMT amplifier with lossy matching networks between the gain stages, the transimpedance amplifier and the distributed amplifier. We conduct a comparative study of these three topologies and determine their relative performance in terms of sensitivity. [...] |
