A tradição de máscaras em Portugal e Espanha e a sua encenação no Festival Internacional da Máscara Ibérica

Abstract

Atualmente, concede-se grande valor à divulgação da tradição cultural, sendo esta uma forma de promover o turismo e de estimular a consciência da valorização da tradição. Na perspetiva da sustentabilidade turística, o turismo cultural proporciona uma alternativa ao turismo de massas, contribuindo para a diversidade cultural e o bem-estar da sociedade. O Festival Internacional da Máscara Ibérica, enquanto forma de turismo cultural, procura divulgar a tradição de máscaras em Portugal e Espanha e outros aspetos da cultura popular. O que a autora tenta resolver neste trabalho é apresentar esta tradição e o seu contexto cultural, e a seguir conhecer e avaliar o Festival. Os métodos são os seguintes: levantamento de referências bibliográficas, observação do Festival com registos fotográficos e realização de entrevistas às pessoas com conhecimento de máscaras. O percurso investigativo reflete que a tradição de máscaras é tão arcaica que não é possível determinar a sua origem exata; as máscaras não são objetos individuais, mas um resultado da atividade do ser humano e do pensamento coletivo num contexto sociocultural; nos rituais, o mascarado é um ser superior, a quem são atribuídas forças supernaturais; a forma de uma máscara reflete a perceção, o gosto e a imaginação do artesão que a esculpiu; o Festival como uma encenação desses rituais contribui para a preservação das tradições populares; a programação do Festival repleta de diversidade trouxe ao público uma experiência excecional. Estudos como o presente poderão contribuir para uma compreensão mais profunda e uma apreciação maior das máscaras de Portugal e Espanha.

Disclose the cultural tradition is now a well-seen way of promoting tourism and of stimulating awareness of the appreciation of tradition. In the perspective of tourism sustainability, cultural tourism provides an alternative to mass tourism, contributing to cultural diversity and the well-being of society. The Festival Internacional da Máscara Ibérica (International Festival of the Iberian Mask) as a form of cultural tourism, seeks to spread the tradition of masks in Portugal and Spain and other aspects of popular culture. What the author tries to solve in this paper is to present this tradition and its cultural context, and then to gather information and evaluate the Festival. The methods are the following: survey of bibliographical references, observation of the Festival with photographic records and interviews with people acknowledged of masks. The investigative course reflects that the tradition of masks is so archaic that its exact origin can not be established; masks are not individual objects, but a result of human activity and collective thinking in a sociocultural context. In rituals, the masquerade is a superior being, to whom supernatural forces are attributed; the shape of a mask reflects the perception, taste and imagination of the craftsman who sculpted it; the Festival as a staging of these rituals contributes to the preservation of popular traditions; the schedule of the Festival’s program has brought the audience an exceptional experience. Studies such as the present may contribute to a deeper understanding and a greater appreciation of the masks of Portugal and Spain.
