Abstract: | O objectivo principal do presente trabalho é determinar as aplicações
The principal objective of this study is to identify possible end uses for quartz sourced from Portuguese veins and pegmatites, taking into account the requirements of various markets. In this way an attempt is made to determine the possible range of applications in the light of the chemical and physical characteristics of the quartz occurring in the deposits studied. The greatest attention focuses on chemical characteristics since the particle mean size and particle size distribution needed for the various specifications are readily obtained through the utilisation of appropriate mineral processing techniques. Therefore, and since the chemical characteristics are intrinsic to the type of deposit, these become the principal limiting factors in determining industrial applications. Despite this, the specific relevance of chemical parameters of the quartz samples from the five deposits studied, has not been allowed to divert attention from the other characteristics. At the same time an attempt was made to select deposits in areas with the greatest occurrence of quartz of veins and pegmatites. Given that there exist innumerable small scale deposits, the selection was restricted to the districts of Braga, Viseu, Guarda and Viseu thereby achieving a reasonable geographical distribution. Because of its economic importance, the stockpile of quartz existing at the now abandoned installations of Fornos Electricos is included in this study with a view to identifying possible applications for this material. Concerning methods utilised in meeting particle size requirements, there are included, in addition to a typical process flow sheet, examples of some installations currently in operation. It is hoped that this study will, in some way, contribute to the correct utilisation of quartz as a raw material of fundamental importance for many industries, and the viable exploitation of quartz reserves existing in Portugal. |
