do mundo.
comunidade fitoplanctónica do Mondego que é bastante limitada; contribuir
do estuário do Mondego (oligohalina, mesohalina e polihalina). Determinaramse
as concentrações de clorofila a por espectrofotometria e as abundâncias
microfitoplanctónicas (organismos superiores a 20 μm). No presente estudo,
As
O segundo taxonomista
obteve sempre abundâncias abaixo do taxonomista principal, tal facto,
Phytoplankton is composed of single cell organisms with the capacity to photosynthesize and survive in suspension in the water column either singly or colonially. They are considered an important component of estuaries that are one of the most productive marine systems in the world. The current dissertation considers the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) for coastal and transitional waters in Portugal, with specific reference to the biological quality element phytoplankton in the transitional waters of the Mondego estuary. The objectives of this work are: to contribute to the somewhat limited information about the phytoplankton community of the Mondego; to contribute to the evaluation of phytoplankton as a biological quality element for the WFD in the transitional waters of the river Mondego, as well as analyse the potential sources of uncertainty for this evaluation under a variety physico-chemical and biological parameters in olighaline, mesohaline and polihaline conditions. The sampling programme was carried out in September 2009 during low tide over the three zones of the Mondego estuary (olighaline, mesohaline and polihaline). The concentrations of chlorophyll a were estimated by spectrophotometry and the abundances of microphytoplankton (organisms greater the 20 μm) by counts with inverted microscopy. During the current study, the temperature decreased and the salinity increased from the oligohaline to the polihaline station. The concentration of the nutrients declined with proximity to the sea, due probably to the mixing of the sea with freshwater. The silicates occurred in the greatest concentration and nitrite in the lowest concentrations within the estuary. The concentrations of chlorophyll a showed no significant relation with the abundance of microphytoplankton. Using both techniques for estimating pigments the biggest source of variation occurred at the level of the stations. In the case of the phytoplankton community, the greatest source of variation occurred at the level of the taxonomist, the water mass and the number of taxa. The greatest abundance of microphytoplankton occurred in the polihaline region, whilst the diatoms were the most significant and abundant group throughout the estuary. The second taxonomist consistently obtained lower values than the principle taxonomist probably due to lower counts for cryptophytes and dinoflagellates. For future work, it is suggested that counts with epifluorescent microscopy should be used together with the those for inverted microscopy; intercalibration between taxonomist to understand differences between the counts and identification of phytoplankton, and to study and understand better the impacts on estuaries, there by identifying improvements for conservation and management in the future. |
