N. M. Kryloff na Universidade de Coimbra em 1927: estudo sobre a sua vida e obra

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe-se dar a conhecer alguns aspectos da vida e obra do matemático russo-ucraniano Nikolay Mitrofanovich Kryloff e é baseado numa descoberta de documentação relativa ao seu nome nos Arquivos da Universidade de Coimbra. É feita uma breve descrição da investigação cientifica matemática na Rússia e em Portugal desde o século XVI até inícios do século XX. Em particular, estuda-se a situação da Faculdade de Matemática da Universidade de Coimbra anteriormente a estada de Kryloff em Portugal. Apresentam-se aspectos relevantes da biografia de Nikolay Kryloff como: formação cientifica, actividades docente e cientifica e interesse peculiar pela história da matemática. Relatam-se algumas passagens curiosas e interessantes do caderno de viagens escrito por N. M. Kryloff. Analisa-se a conferência de Kryloff com a qual inicia o Curso de Análise Superior na Faculdade de Matemática da Universidade de Coimbra em Maio e Abril de 1927. Apresenta-se, também, alguma correspondência estabelecida entre Kryloff e Portugal após a sua estada no nosso pais.

This work aims to give some information on aspects of the biography and workof the russian-ukranian mathematician Nikolay Mitrofanovich Kryloff and it is based on some documents found in the Archives of the University of Coimbra wich mentioned his name. A brief description of the scientific research on mathematics conducted in Russia and Portugal from 16Ih to the 2oth century is presented. In particular, it is the situation of the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra prior to the arrival of Kryloff to Portugal. Several relevant biographical aspects of N. Kryloff are presented, such as: his scientific activities, and also his specific interest in the history of mathematics. There is also a report of some curious and interesting episodes taken from a travelbook written by Nikolay Kryloff. In this work it is studied a conference with wich Kryloff opened his Course on Superior Analysis in the Faculty of the Mathematics in the University of Coimbra, in April and May of 1927. Finally, some of the correspondence Kryloff exchanged with Portuguese people after he left the country is presented as well.

Le present travail se propose faire connaitre quelques aspects de Ia vie et de I'oeuvre du mathematician russe-ukranien Nikolay Mitrofanovich Kryloff et il est basé sur une découverte de documentation sur son nom dans les Archives de I'Université de Coimbra. On y fait une bréve description de Ia recherche scientifique en mathématique en Russie et au Portugal depuis le XVle siécle jusqu'au début du XXe siècle. En particulier, on étudie Ia situation de Ia Faculté de Mathernatique de I'Université de Coimbra avant le séjour de Kryloff au Portugal. On présente les aspects saillants de Ia biographie de N. Kryloff comme par example: Ia formation scientifique, les activités enseignante et scientifique et I'intérêt particulier par I'histoire de Ia mathematique. On rapporte quelques passages curieux et intéressants du cahier de voyages écrit par Nikolay Kryloff. On analyse Ia conference de Kryloff avec laquelle débute le Cours d'Analyse Supérieur de Ia Faculté de Mathématique de I'Université de Coimbra en Mai et en Avril 1927. On présente, aussi, quelque correspondence échangée entre Kryloff el le Portugal aprés son séjour dans notre pays.
