O presente trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento e
A comparação
The largest building energy consumption and CO2 emissions are related to space heating systems. Thermal energy storage systems, using phase change materials, are widely investigated mechanisms and an area of study in fast development. However, their low thermal conductivity can restrict their potential utilisation as it decreases the heat transfer response associated with charging and discharging processes. The use of macroencapsulated PCM thus emerges as a potential solution to increase the thermal efficiency of several applications, since it can store large amounts of energy in the form of latent heat, and release it when required, assisting electrical systems by reducing energy consumption. The present work consisted in the development and optimisation of a solution with macroencapsulated PCM in order to improve its global performance. The thermal behaviour of the PCM was studied, both for charging and discharging, through the curves of net fraction and effective specific heat of the PCM, as a function of temperature. Different ways of charging the PCM and the influence of the insulation of the plates with PCM were analysed, taking into account the charging and discharging times and the heat transfer rate in the PCM. For the most efficient solution, the influence of macroencapsulation with two different materials, aluminium and high density polyethylene (HDPE), on the charging and discharging processes of the PCM was studied by analysing the heat transfer rate in the PCM. The advantages of their application in active space heating systems were discussed. The comparison between HDPE and aluminium as macrocapsules for the same PCM should be made on the basis of several criteria, including their thermal conductivity, melting and solidification temperature range, and encapsulation influence, with the choice between the two being based on the needs of the application concerned. |
