Rural. In the past few years tourism has increasingly expanded and become more segmented, focusing on specific market niches, such as rural tourism. Consequently an interest to study the usage of foreign languages has raised, as rural tourism relates to a restrict realm of tourism which is continuously attracting more tourists. In fact, the use of foreign languages has gained more and more significance in the business world, particularly the English language, which has become fundamental in terms of engagement with the touristcustomer. This paper will contribute in responding to the following question: is the use of foreign languages to be considered an competitive advantage that affects the success of a business in a rural area? It has been possible to evaluate the use of languages in this sector by surveying tourism home owners in the rural areas of mainland Portugal, Azores and Madeira. We have concluded that the use of languages in tourism in rural areas has, in fact, a really important role in the success of a business as it provides a closer engagement with the tourist-customer, creating a relationship of immediate trust. This conclusion was based on bibliographical research, specifically focused in the development of tourism in rural areas; on research of today's value and use of languages; and on the results of the survey. Languages hold an essential and indispensable position as a mean of communication in the day-to-day of tourism home owners in rural areas. |
