Profissionalmente, Eça de Queirós viveu quase toda a sua vida fora de Portugal: primeiro em Havana, e depois em Newcastle, Bristol e Paris. É, por conseguinte, muito natural que o escritor tenha abordado o tema da emigração, tanto em escritos epistolares como em obras de ficção.

Professionally, Eça de Queirós lived almost all his life outside of Portugal: first in Havana, then in Newcastle, Bristol and Paris. It is, therefore, very natural that the writer has addressed the subject of emigration, both in epistolary writings and in works of fiction.
