A revolta estudantil de 1968 e a cultura de protesto da geração jovem no romance Sem Tecto entre Ruínas, de Augusto Abelaira

Abstract

A convulsão política, social e cultural na Europa Ocidental durante a segunda metade da década de 1960 ficou marcada pelos protestos juvenis contra o establishment, que atingiram o seu clímax emblemático em 1968, o ano-pivô da agitação (cf. Marwick, 1998, p. 585). Não obstante as medidas repressivas do Estado Novo, também em Portugal foram vários os sinais da subversão e dissidência juvenis.

O ano de 1968 apresenta-se como o tempo histórico de Sem Tecto, entre Ruínas, de Augusto Abelaira. Neste romance, repercutem-se as vivências individuais e colectivas de jovens e quarentões que experienciaram com expectativa o ano da queda de Salazar. A agitação política nacional e internacional de 1968, o confronto sociocultural entre a geração dos pais e a dos filhos, bem como a revolução sexual e de costumes protagonizada pela juventude de finais dos anos 60 são questões que a acção do romance convoca e que procurarei explorar através de uma «leitura cultural» no presente artigo. Por último, também o significado de «o que é ser jovem» naquele contexto histórico e sociocultural de (re)definição identitária será objecto de reflexão.

The political, social and cultural turmoil that took place in Western Europe during the second half of the 1960s was branded by youth protests against the establishment, which reached their peak in 1968, a “pivotal year” of the upheaval (Marwick, 1998, p. 585). Despite the repressive measures of the Estado Novo (the dictatorship administration in Portugal at the time), many were the signs of dissidence and subversion among young people.The year of 1968 is the historical time of Sem Tecto, entre Ruínas, by Augusto Abelaira. This novel bears witness to the individual and collective experiences of young and middle-aged characters who lived with expectation the year Salazar fell from his chair. The national and international political turmoil of 1968, the socio-cultural gap between the parents’ and the children’s generations, as well as the sexual and customs revolution led by the late 1960s youth are issues brought forth by the novel’s plot. In this article, I will attempt to explore these issues through a cultural reading of the novel. Lastly, I will reflect on the meaning of what it means to be young in that historical and socio--cultural context of identitary (re)definition.
