Abstract: This paper draws on the feminine choir Pequenas Cantoras do Postigo do Sol, conducted by Vergílio Pereira, in Oporto, between 1941 and 1953. This choir of girls that, as time went by, grew up and turned into women, has generated a split within Oporto’s public opinion and exposed divergences between two Estado Novo organs: Governo Civil and Junta de Província do Douro Litoral. In both sectors’ arguments, distinctive perspectives stand out in what refers to social mobility and woman’s role in society, being the choir a space for the exercise of class and gender values.
