The work carried out is aimed at the verification and validation of a prototype for the degradation of water pollutants by an electrooxidation process, using boron-doped diamond thin-film electrodes. Structural and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed using SolidWorks software, which allowed the evaluation of the performance of the prototype and indicated possible improvements in its structure. In the CFD simulations, the theoretical values of the calculated water flow velocities were initially compared with those obtained by simulation in a simple tube. The results were promising since the relative errors were lower than 12% for the outlet speed and lower than 1% for the inlet pressure, which allows reliability in the CFD results. CFD simulations were then carried out under the same experimental conditions used in the laboratory (flow rates of 1,5 L/h, 3 L/h, and 4 L/h), concluding that as the flow increases, the speed inside the module also increases. A structural simulation was also carried out, under static conditions, in which the applied forces were previously extracted from a CFD simulation carried out at a flow rate of 10 L/h, to verify whether the constituent materials would resist the forces exerted by the fluid at a flow rate higher than the ones tested in the laboratory. The results indicated that the module is robust and capable of the intended application. For the prototype's validation, electrooxidation tests were performed in the laboratory, under static and dynamic conditions, followed by Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy. The obtained degradation percentage values were in the range of 30% to 35% with dynamic conditions using lower flow rates, which is in line with the CFD simulation which had demonstrated that the increase of the flow also results in the augmentation of the speed inside the model, which allows the conclusion that there is a reduction of the contact time of the fluid with the electrodes, and as a result, there is a reduction of the degradation of the pollutants. For the tests in the static conditions, the percentages were higher than the ones obtained in the dynamic tests in the range of 10% to 15%. The results of pollutant degradation in static and dynamic conditions allowed the prototype to be validated for use on a laboratorial scale for the following service conditions: contaminated water with a flow rate of 1,5 L/h, 3 L/h, and 4 L/h, at room temperature and subject to atmospheric pressure at the entrance and exit of the water. |
