consequências visíveis do processo.
sistemas.
organismos. The pressures applied to freshwater aquatic ecosystems have been contributing to the degradation of the ecological quality of these ecosystems, with accelerated eutrophication being one of the main visible consequences of the process. In lentic systems, zooplankton plays a central role in controlling primary production, thus understanding their distribution and activity is critical for a better management of these ecosystems. This dissertation was developed in this general context and in the broad scope of a project that aims to understand the role of surface currents with thermal origin and modulation by wind action in the transport of nutrients through the interface between littoral macrophyte stands and the limnetic zone. In this way, the objective of this study was to evaluate the establishment of diel horizontal migrations of the zooplankton in Lake Vela (Quiaios, Portugal) and the potential association of these to convective currents of thermal origin that establish in the water sub-surface between littoral and the limnetic zones. Lake Vela is an ideal model for the study of horizontal migration patterns of zooplankton because it is a shallow lake with high predation pressure, which has been understood as a fundamental driver of the spatial distribution of zooplankton in these systems. Physico-chemical parameters and zooplankton samples were collected, as well as water temperature was monitored in the limnetic zone and in two littoral zones with different vegetation cover, during two sampling campaigns of 48 h (2019 and 2020). The variation of water temperature between the limnetic and the littoral zones suggests the establishment of thermal currents towards the littoral, stronger during the day than during the night, and of magnitude dependent on the type of vegetation cover of the littoral. The spatial distribution of zooplankton was not consistent with expected patterns in high predatory pressure scenarios (i.e., a consistent trend of increased zooplankton abundance in littoral areas during the day and in the limnetic zone at night was not noticed). Often, and especially during the day, it was possible to associate the direction of thermal currents with the spatial distribution of some zooplankton groups, which suggests that these currents have a relevant role in the horizontal migration patterns of these organisms. |
