The present thesis consists of an ethnographic study of Porto's jazz scene, focusing particularly on the creation and expansion of Associação Porta-Jazz (the Porta-Jazz Association) since 2010. It seeks to identify the concept "jazz scene" in the context of an administrative region such as that consisting of Greater Porto and the city of Porto itself, which historically maintains an asymmetrical relationship with the city of Lisbon, bastion and epicentre of the development of jazz in Portugal, above all since the creation of the Hot Club de Portugal in 1946. The polarised situation that can be observed in Portugal between Lisbon, the country's administrative capital, and Porto, which is also known as capital of the North, has consequences on many levels of the country's culture, including that of jazz. The present thesis investigates that contextual universe and seeks to perceive the processes by which jazz becomes consolidated in Porto, from an initial period in which the presence of jazz in that city was limited, up to the period which begins in 1974 and culminates with the founding of Associação Porta-Jazz and its editorial label. In the present thesis I use interdisciplinary theoretical approaches, bringing together Jazz Studies, Ethnomusicology and Performance Studies; I undertook field work and an "investigação partilhada" (shared investigation) approach, in a constant process of production of collective knowledge with the musicians, being myself both musician and investigator. I argue that Porto's jazz scene is established by means of a process involving the defragmentation of a group of agents such as musicians, institutions, and other people involved with jazz (owners of bars, restaurants and other such spaces where jazz is promoted); together, they represent what anthropologist Victor Turner defines as communitas, as a way of representing liminal individuals or, in other words, individuals on the margins of hegemonic society. An account of the presence over time of jazz in Porto represents a subterranean and counter-hegemonic memory, that results from a larger construct which inherits a discourse that privileges community, solidarity, communitas per se. Finally, the present thesis discusses the state of permanent transitoriness and liminality of Associação Porta-Jazz, and how this state organizes itself into an artistic, aesthetic, ethical, political and counter-hegemonic movement.
