This report is based on an action-research project, relying on qualitative research, carried out in the English class, on a group of children in 3rd and 4th grade of a primary school in the central area of Portugal. This project, entitled “The sound of Big Ben spreads across Europe”, aimed to understand how didactical and pedagogical activities in intercomprehension can promote the linguistic culture in the English class in primary school. The collected data (linguistic biography, video recording, and field notes) were analysed according to the Linguistic Culture dimensions: cognitive, representational, and praxeological, in order to understand what knowledges, attitudes and capacities the students developed through pedagogical and didactic activities in intercomprehension. When analysing the data, we have concluded that, regarding the cognitive dimension, students were able to recognize language families; mobilize knowledge to compare languages and identify cultural and linguistic aspects of the countries mentioned in the project. In relation to the representational dimension, they have altered some preconceived ideas about languages as objects of teaching-learning and affective objects. Finally, concerning the praxeological dimension, students developed the ability to compare texts from different Germanic languages, resorting to orthographical and phonetical similarities/transparencies. Consequently, they have developed a greater awareness of linguistic diversity in the society and in the world, as well as increasing their linguistic repertoires. These results underline the importance of integrating plural approaches in the primary school curriculum, not only because they develop metalinguistic, reading and communicative abilities, but mainly because they inspire positive attitudes and openness to other languages, cultures and people. |
