A mesma
acesso a informação financeira.
existentes) The present work proposes to study the determinants of saving and financial inclusion in Angola, verifying the degree of influence of individual, demographic and financial characteristics on the behavior of saving and financial inclusion. For that purpose, a questionnaire was carried out and implemented to obtain a sample of the Angolan population for a period related to the beginning of the year 2019 and we performed probit estimation. Finally, individual and demographic and financial characteristics were related to the percentage of income earmarked for savings, saving forms, saving motivations, barriers to saving and other savings’ indicators such as bank account and loan. The results indicate that there is gender differentiation in savings in Angola, with males being more likely to save. The same differentiation is found when we analyze the determinants of savings by motivation, where we find that males are the ones who save the most to open a business or to acquire durable goods; when we analyze the barriers to saving we find that women are the ones that most fail to save because the yield is low. We have also found that factors increasing the probability of saving are schooling, the degree of importance attributed to savings, having a bank account and the loan. With respect to financial inclusion, the results indicate that the key drivers are gender (being a male), to be aware of the importance of budget management and to have access to financial information. Our work contains results to design policies to promote savings and financial inclusion in Angola. We have contributed to the expanding literature on the determinants of savings and financial inclusion, focusing on Angola, as well as existing works for Africa. Second, we focus on individual needs and feelings about financial inclusion. Third, Angola and its capital, Luanda, is a dualistic financial market organized around the interaction between formal and informal institutions and agents. Fourth, we include as explanatory variables the access to financial information, the degree of importance attributed to savings, and the planning and management of the family budget (variables that are largely unexplored in existing studies) |
