The modelling of a reactional system is of great importance to the chemical industry. Having information about how the reaction system behaves, it is possible to predict the final amounts of reactants and products, as well as the rate of the reactions involved. In a process comprising isomerization reactions, there is an added need to control product distributionince not all isomers are desirable. The present work focuses on the kinetic modelling of the isomerization of four resin acids - levopimaric, palustric, abietic and neoabietic acids. The initial model was proposed by analogy to the intermediate carbocation model. By successive simplification, simpler models are later proposed and analyzed. Finally, the various models are compared, aiming the selection of the model that fits better the experimental data. The selected model was the simplest model, where the reactions with levopimaric are irreversible and there is also no formation of neoabietic from abietic. |
