plurilingues pudemos constatar curiosidade, receptividade, representações e
curiosidade e receptividade do aluno face à alteridade. Permitem, finalmente,
anteriores.
Por último, apresentamos sugestões para estudos futuros. This work describes a study done in the classroom with a 10th Form of English as foreign language, level 6, in Águeda Secondary School during the school year 2001/2002. Action-research was the chosen methodology, with the teacher as the researcher according to the characteristics of the work strategies. The work with the students aimed to encourage and to develop the awareness of processes of metacommunication concerning intercultural communicative competence. The guideline behind the tasks of this work was a process of decentring the self, in order to observe Otherness critically and for the students to gradually become more autonomous. Therefore we divided our study in three parts whose first tasks were given and controlled by the research-teacher and the last ones led by the students. The first part was compound of a focusinterview with the students and an interview with plurilingual people. The second part was followed by the analysis intercultural communication testimonies. The third part characterised by the students’ management of the tasks by writing and subsequent analysis of their intercultural communication testimonies, as well as, writing and interviewing plurilingual people. Throughout the tasks there was a characterisation in four stages of the intercultural speaker. These tasks allowed us to collect the following kind of data: transcriptions of the focus-interview; transcriptions of the interview with plurilingual people; reflections the students recorded after analysing the intercultural communication testimonies; From the analysis of the transcriptions of the focus-interview, we verified that the students possess concepts and sensitivity towards the factors inherent to the interaction with the Other. From the transcriptions of the interview with plurilingual people we were able to observe curiosity, receptivity, representations and stereotypes among the students related to Otherness as well as to themselves and their own culture. From the reflections the students recorded after analysing the intercultural communication testimonies, we noticed an acquisition of other factors that help and/or impede intercultural communication, also a critical receptivity as well as empathy towards the tasks the students themselves had done. The final task that was devised and led by the students themselves, namely intercultural communication testimonies, from their analysis we verified an awareness of the aspects that characterise and differentiate an interaction among people of different language and culture, and the interview with plurilingual people, from the analysis of the transcriptions we verified that the students were curious to learn about the interviewees’ problems and experiences of living in the counties they lived. The students’ choice of subjects to interview, showed their capacity to differentiate between people with basic and increased linguistic capacities. In the characterisation of what it means to be an intercultural communicator, the students revealed some difficulties in putting theory into praxis. The data analysis helped us to conclude the impact on the learner of the guideline behind the tasks, i.e., the process of becoming aware of the circumstances involved in the intercultural communication, the benefits of this communication concerning the development of a critical cultural awareness, as well as valuing the places and strategies to this awareness. It also helped us to conclude the contribution of the reflective dimension of the tasks to the development of concepts and of a wider sense of the Otherness, despite the difficulty, to a certain extent, revealed by the students in expressing their concepts in an autonomous and reflexive way. The results presented here, suggest, in our opinion, that the implemented strategies show that it is possible for students to approach and develop concepts, curiosity and receptivity to otherness as well as competences that will allow the learner to be a potential intercultural speaker and the last but not the least the interaction which is being co-built in language classes. Suggestions for further research are put forward. |
