Famílias imigrantes e sucesso escolar de jovens migrantes em Ovar, Portugal

Abstract

Neste trabalho pretende-se analisar as razões conducentes a um elevado sucesso académico entre os alunos migrantes dos países do leste da Europa que entraram em Portugal pela mão dos seus progenitores a partir do ano 2000. O estudo centra-se nas respostas dadas a entrevistas efetuadas a dez famílias migrantes residentes no concelho de Ovar e cujos adolescentes revelam bons desempenhos académicos. É dada relevância à sua fácil integração linguística, cultural e escolar e aos mecanismos utilizados por estes migrantes. Serão ainda feitas considerações sobre os esforços ao nível do sistema de ensino português para acolher e integrar os alunos migrantes, promovendo um espírito de igualdade. Far-se-á uma breve abordagem a questões teóricas e estudos sobre o fenómeno migratório e as questões de cidadania, nacionalidade e identidade no contexto europeu. Conceitos como os estereótipos, o racismo e a xenofobia são também referidos neste trabalho por serem significativos para este estudo.

This work intends to analyze the reasons that lead to a high academic success among the migrant students from the countries of Eastern Europe who entered in Portugal by the hand of their parents from the year 2000 and onward. The study focuses on the answers given to the interviews to ten migrant families residing in the municipality of Ovar and whose teenagers reveal good academic performances. Relevance is given to their easy linguistic and cultural integration and the mechanisms used by these migrants for this purpose. It will also be made considerations on the efforts of the Portuguese education system to receive and integrate migrant students, promoting a spirit of equality. There will be a brief approach to theoretical issues and studies about the migration phenomenon and the issues of citizenship, nationality and identity in the European context. Concepts such as stereotyping, racism and xenophobia are also referred to in this work because they are significant to this study.
