The agricultural activity covers a diverse range of activities, with significant influence in the Portuguese economy. These ones, with common characteristics among them and very distinct from the activities outside this scope. The agricultural activity undergoes a process of biological transformation, which can constantly change the accounting treatment of the biological assets. The existence of an active market may be the solution for some situations. However, the fair value can not be reliably measured. The sheer size of the company determines the treatment to be applied by adjusting the rules to their characteristics, originating a different accounting and tax treatment. To investigate this issue, we propose ourselves in this thesis to study the influence of companies size on the adoption of standards and in the interpretation of paradigms associated with accounting issues within the agricultural activity. To this end, we conducted a series of interviews and questionnaires to various financial officers of agricultural enterprises, proceeding then to the descriptive analysis. Among the key findings of this research we stress that the voluntary choice in the normative is linked to the characteristics of the firms. The companies with characteristics of micro entities tend to adopt NC - ME, the companies with characteristics of small entities tend to adopt NCRF–PE, the medium and large companies use, per requirement, NCRF 17. |
