Nesta
perspetiva, a dissertação segue no âmbito do estudo experimental de fluidos
reoespessantes.
Shear thickening fluids are a type of fluid whose viscosity increases considerably when subjected to an external load. The study of these fluids has developed significantly in recent years, so that one of their potential applications in engineering is the development of shock absorbers and impact energy absorbing composites. Based on global sustainable development needs, the search for sustainable materials and their use in different types of applications, replacing nonrenewable resources, is increasingly crucial. In this perspective, the dissertation follows the scope of the experimental study of shear thickening fluids. This translates into the survey of existing fluids in the literature, together with the formulation of new green composites improved by them, evaluating their rheological properties. Thus, it was intended to guarantee the use of materials with less environmental impact, which identically guarantee the safety associated with protection and energy absorption applications. The theme was studied through the experimental component, with dynamic and static tests. After the formulation of the new green composites that join cork with shear thickening fluids, the experimental part was advanced. This was performed through the use of a drop tower for impact tests, where tests were carried out in order to observe the damage caused and to obtain values of the energy absorbed by the samples. Next, quasi-static tests were performed, from which the necessary values were obtained to complete the mechanical characterization of the compounds. The tests performed allowed us to conclude that when the percentage of fluid in the sample is higher than 20%, a deagglomeration occurs, making the results not very interesting and feasible. On the other hand, the samples whose percentage of fluid is lower than that mentioned above showed good results, able to withstand multi-impacts and loads. It was concluded that although the impregnation of fluid in cork leads to a decrease in the energy absorbed, it allows a possible alteration of its mechanical properties and, consequently, an adaptation of this to specific purposes. |
