The European effort in reducing energy consumption is one of the main goals for the near future. Portugal, as a member of the European Union, mustn’t ignore this purpose. In our country, and following this line, some measures were put in action in order to meet these goals, which can be found in the National Strategy for Energy, “Estratégia Nacional para a Energia - ENE2020." This work describes a new technology of great potential, and tries to set its roots so that those established goals can be met. This technology consists of the extraction of thermal energy from the wastewater that runs on public sewers. Initially, a study regarding the typical buildings of Portugal and the Portuguese energy consumption habits was conducted. Also, the technology on itself was explored in terms of what it entailed and its ramifications and potential. Due to the fact that it’s a pioneer technology in Portugal, there was the need to understand the potential of the sewers. After an area of the city of Aveiro had been established, inquiries to the inhabitants on their water and energy consumption habits and values were made, and the temperature of the sewers of that area was measured for a day. Even though it may not seem much, a big step has been taken from what has been studied in other countries. Not only was there an attempt to understand the thermal behavior of the wastewater but also the temperature of the sewers’ inner air and, that way, understand if this is a beneficial resource. In the end, the results exceed all expectations, and it was shown that both the wastewater and the sewers’ inner air temperatures are high and steady throughout the day. |
