Escreviver a infância - José Gomes Ferreira e José Saramago

Abstract

Tempo fértil de aprendizagens, a infância constitui um vetor temático recorrente nos textos literários que fazem da memória o seu móbil narrativo. Em contexto autobiográfico, a natureza da memória, tomada como evocação ficcional, assume um papel crucial, se considerarmos a variação subjetiva das modalidades de tratamento da temporalidade e dos mecanismos de rememoração. O presente estudo propõe uma leitura crítico-comparativa de Calçada do Sol, de José Gomes Ferreira, e de As Pequenas Memórias, de José Saramago, privilegiando não apenas a inscrição temporal das vivências infantis relatadas, mas também a peculiar relação que ambos os memorialistas mantêm com o teatro do mundo na época que lhes coube viver. Averiguam-se, nesse sentido, os diversos processos narrativos de reminiscência, a função da transfiguração imaginativa no ato de (re)criação do passado, o caráter social da memória e as repercussões deste tempo fundador na conformação ideológica e axiológica do sujeito autoral.

As a period of meaningtful learning, childhood is a recurrent thematic strand in literary texts in which memory plays a key role. In autobiographical writing, the nature of memory, understood as fictional evocation, plays a crucial function if one considers the subjective variation of the strategies of time representation and of the mechanisms of remembrance. This dissertation develops a comparative critical reading of Calçada do Sol by José Gomes Ferreira and As Pequenas Memórias by José Saramago, so as to highlight not only the time frame within which childhood experience took place, but also the specific relationship of both writers to the historical time they lived in. We will therefore analyse the narrative devices of memory representation, the imaginative transfiguration implied by the (re)creation of the past, the social character of memory and the importance of this seminal period in the shaping of the values and ideology of both authors.
