Abstract: | As Perturbações da Comunicação, Linguagem e Fala têm consequências a nível
Professores do 1º ciclo do ensino básico.
The Communication, Language and Speech Disorders have consequences in the personal, social and learning process of children. Thus, these disorders should be identified as early as possible, in order to enable timely intervention that can prevent or mitigate their consequences, contributing to the personal and academic success of children. Teachers have a very important role in the early identification of children with Communication, Language and Speech Disorders and a collaborative work between them and Speech Therapists may facilitate the rehabilitation process. This study aims to survey the needs and the strategies of basic education teachers when working with children with Communication, Language and Speech Disorders. Specifically, we want to know i) the degree of difficulty in identifying the warning signals from these disorders, ii) the type of procedures used to identify children at risk and its frequency of use and iii) the frequency of use of strategies aiming to improve children’s communication, language, speech and learning skills. Thus, we developed a questionnaire that was sent to basic education teachers through several collaborative educational entities in Portugal. A total of 51 teachers filled the questionnaire. The main results, indicate that i) between 17,65% and 45,10% of teachers have at least moderate difficulty of in identifying the warning signs related to the Communication, Language and Speech Disorders, ii) screening tools to identify children at risk are not used very often and iii) some strategies aiming to improve children’s communication, language, speech and learning skills are used only occasionally by 2,38% to 60% of respondents. The Speech Therapist may have an important role in teachers training, particularly in identifying the warning signs, the use of screening tools and the use of strategies in working with these children. |
