Nowadays, the concerns about energy and water consumption have been increasing. In Portugal, there is little attention given concerning the efficiency of water supply. The current model of water supply systems operation is based on the levels of the reservoir, which swich on when the level is low and swich off when the hight level is reached. This model doesn´t take into account the variation of the energy cost throughout the day nor the use of renewable resources. In this thesis a mathematical model which is an optimized operating standards to reduce energy consumption for water supply systems is created. It´s was also analysed the introduction of a hydroelectric station everytime the topographic features of the land permited. The financial and energy benefits of this aplication is also analysed. The combination of renewable energy in this model allows to obtain higher benefits, which is called a multi-purpose system. With the goal of minimizing the cost of running these operating systems and maximize the profits from the sale of energy to the grid, several simulation analyses were performed by using the applied methodology in order to assess the flexibility of the model. In this thesis, the results lead to the conclusion that the use of this methodology allows to obtain a high economic and energy benefits. |
