A rede do ensino primário em Águeda durante o Estado Novo

Abstract

Dado não existirem estudos sobre o ensino primário em Águeda, durante o Estado Novo, este trabalho constitui um contributo para a história deste subsistema de ensino em Portugal, durante o período em apreço. E, uma vez que os subsistemas de ensino são coerentes entre si, este estudo será igualmente útil para a compreensão histórica do ensino secundário – liceal e técnico – no concelho de Águeda. A leitura dos documentos compulsados dá razão aos autores que, nos últimos anos, têm notado a falta de estudos de História da Educação de incidência local, de modo a percebermos melhor a diversidade do conjunto e as especificidades locais. No início dos anos 30, a rede escolar em Águeda era débil. Todavia, a partir dos anos 40, o concelho de Águeda acompanhou, efetivamente, a tendência que se verificava no resto do país: o Plano dos Centenários favoreceu a construção de uma boa rede escolar. Podemos mesmo afirmar que Águeda terá sido um dos poucos concelhos que viu construir, nos anos 50 e 60, quase todos os edifícios escolares previstos naquele Plano, apesar de pouco apetrechados em recursos humanos e materiais, mesmo sabendo que a expansão da rede educativa servia o duplo objetivo de alfabetizar (o mínimo) e de tornar as escolas o meio privilegiado de formação ideológica. Assim, em resposta à nossa pergunta investigativa, concluímos globalmente que, durante o Estado Novo, Águeda não constituiu uma exceção à regra imposta pelas políticas educativas do poder político central, nesta matéria.

As there are no studies about primary school levels in Águeda, during the "Estado Novo" period, this particular work was planned to be a contribute for the history of this educational subsystem in Portugal, along the previously mentioned period. As the educational subsystems are coherent amongst each other, this study will be also useful to historically understand high school education- both high school and professional instruction- in the district of Águeda. The reading of the documents, which have been analyzed, provides evidence that there is a clear lack of local studies as far as History of Education is concerned and as a result it is harder to comprehend the diversity of the whole as well as its local specificities. In the beginning of the thirties, the school net in Águeda was considered frail. However, from the forties onward, the district of Águeda efficiently followed the tendency of the rest of the country: The Centenary's Plan favored the construction of a good school net. We can clearly state that Águeda was one of the few districts that witnessed the construction in the fifties and the sixties of all the school buildings envisaged in the Plan, although the buildings were poorly equipped as far as human and material resources were concerned. We also should bear in mind that the expansion of the net was meant to serve a double objective: on the one hand, alphabetization (at least at a very basic level) and on the other hand, turning schools in a privileged means of ideological schooling. Therefore, and in search of an answer to the core of our research, we can globally conclude that during the "Estado Novo" period, Águeda represented no exception to the rule imposed by the educative policies of the central government in this matter.
