A epoxidação do geraniol
In this dissertation, and in the scope of the “Mestrado em Química de Produtos Naturais”, the preparation, characterization and use of heteropolyoxotungstates in the oxidative catalysis of organic compounds, using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing agent will be presented. In this work, the catalytic activity of several MnIII and FeIII mono-substituted Keggin type heteropolyoxotungstates, as tetrabuthylammonium (TBA) salts or as chiral salts of S-aspartic acid dimethyl ester (Me2Asp) and S-leucine methyl ester (MeLeu), was studied in the oxidation of several organic substrates. The Keggin type anions used have the general formula [XW11M’(H2O)O39]m-, where X = P, Si, B and M’ = Mn and Fe. The organic substrates studied include one monoterpene (geraniol), one cycloalkane (cyclooctane), one alkylbenzene (ethylbenzene) and two cycloalkylbenzenes (indane and tetralin). The first chapter consists on a brief description of the chemistry of the polyoxotungstates, with a special incidence on the transition metal mono-substituted Keggin anions. A few considerations are made about the transition metal catalysis of oxidation reactions, with a particular emphasis on the use of polyoxotungstates in oxidative catalysis, along with the use of hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing agent. In the second chapter, the synthesis and characterization of the MeLeu salts of mono-substituted Keggin anions, [XW11M’(H2O)O39]m-, X= P, Si, B and M’=MnIII, FeIII, and Me2Asp salts of [XW11M’(H2O)O39]m-, X= P, B and M’=MnIII, FeIII, are described. The MeLeu and Me2Asp salts characterization was carried out by IV, UV-Vis, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis. The results obtained in the homogeneous, liquid phase, catalytic oxidation of geraniol and cyclooctane with hydrogen peroxide, using the MeLeu and Me2Asp salts of the referred anions, are presented and discussed in the third chapter. These compounds revealed to be efficient and selective catalysts in the alkane and alkene oxidation. The geraniol epoxidation occurred preferentially at the C2-C3 bond, whereas cyclooctane gave rise to the corresponding ketone and hydroperoxide, with high selectivity. In the presence of the MeLeuPW11Mn catalyst, a small enantiomeric excess was detected in the epoxidation of geraniol. The ethylbenzene, indane and tetralin oxidation reactions were carried out in a homogeneous system using the TBA salts of the MnIII and FeIII mono-substituted heteropolyanions as catalysts. These salts were shown to be catalytically active, evidencing high selectivity for the corresponding ketone and, in the case of indane and ethylbenzene, also for the respective alkyl hydroperoxide. These results are described in the fourth chapter. In the fifth chapter, all the experimental details, including the methods of synthesis, the general oxidation reaction conditions, the equipment and the reagents used, are described. |
