Abstract: | The adoption of Blockchain technology, in particular cryptocurrency, is increasing
and currently growing at an increasing pace, close to the rate of adoption of the
internet during the 1990s. The number of users of cryptocurrency as a payment
method is also increasing and businesses, aware of this growth, have already announced
that they intend to accept cryptocurrency as a means of payment.
However, these advances and growth are not reflected and don’t apply directly to
brick-and-mortar stores, where the adoption of cryptocurrency payments has different
circumstances and requires the use of a Point of Sale, which includes various
problems and disadvantages in accepting cryptocurrency payments.
This Dissertation analyses the current established problems in accepting payments
in cryptocurrencies and the related works in the area, compares solutions present
in the market and explores the feasibility of accepting cryptocurrency payments in
a typical brick-and-mortar store using Points of Sale.
Therefore, a Point of Sale prototype application compatible with Android technology
was developed, aiming to mitigate the associated problems using the test networks
of the Arbitrum One and Polygon blockchains. The prototype implemented
supports the creation of invoices, payment processing, passcode authentication,
creation of a cryptocurrency wallet, generation of receipts, custom tokens and access
to the history of transactions.
The results of the experiments conducted on the developed prototype, demonstrated
the mitigation of the identified problems, obtaining transaction fees and
transaction confirmation times, similar or better, when compared, to card payments,
demonstrating that accepting cryptocurrency payments can be feasible in
the context of a typical break-and-mortar store. |
