A resistência destes plásticos a
solicitações a longo prazo, isto é, à fadiga, é ainda desconhecida. Estes
Over the last few years, there has been a growing demand for lightweight materials with high mechanical strength in order to replace metallic ones. That said, the welding of thermoplastics is a process that has been a subject of increasing interest, but which is not yet fully mastered. Also, the resistance of these plastics to long-term stresses is still unknown. These values are tabulated for materials most commonly used in industries, but not for thermoplastics. Fatigue tests look forward to determining the life span of materials when subjected to cyclic loads or deformations. This thesis analyses the fatigue resistance of laser-welded thermoplastic joints, specifically high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The joints were welded using an ND:Yag laser machine (SISMA SWA300), using transmission in an overlapping joint configuration. The quality of the welding was validated through tensile and flexural tests, together with optimisations of the laser welding parameters. This work revealed that the S-N curve obtained after the fatigue tests is of a desirable shape (with a R² coefficient above 0.95) and flexural yield strengths of more than 30 MPa were recorded. |
