Abstract: | O Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH) foi criado pelas Nações Unidas
A Pegada
e as Energias Renováveis.
(Common Correlated Effect Mean Group).
The Human Development Index (HDI) was created by the United Nations for Development in 1990, and is a statistical indicator used to measure the degree of social and economic development of countries. The Ecological Footprint (EP) is used to understand the connection between the human part and the ecological part, that is, it is used to estimate the necessary amount of natural resources for human consumption to be maintained. Currently, humanity presents major challenges, one of which is improving human well-being, while maintaining ecological limits, as it appears that much of economic growth is achieved through the uncontrolled consumption of natural resources. The present study aims to understand whether there is a trade-off between the Ecological Footprint and the Human Development Index, using data from 42 European countries from 2006 to 2018. Other variables were also used to understand how they influence two others mentioned previously: Financial Development Index, Globalization Index, Human Freedom Index, Urban Population, Biocapacity and Renewable Energy. In order to carry out this analysis, two models were used, one which has the Ecological Footprint as its dependent variable and the other which has the Human Development Index as its dependent variable, to which two econometric tests were applied, the IFE (Interactive Fixed Effects) and the CCEMG (Common Correlated Effect Mean Group). Through the results of this study, it is concluded that there is a trade-off between the Ecological Footprint and the Human Development Index, that is, a high Human Development Index implies a high Ecological Footprint. This leads to problems when trying to achieve human well-being and environmental sustainability simultaneously. Governments have an important role when it comes to reach the goals of human well-being and environmental protection, as they can help countries achieve these two goals simultaneously. |
