as atitudes preconceituosas e práticas discriminatórias.
crianças compreendem o mundo, nomeadamente as pessoas idosas e o
As crianças
As
Although the proportion of older people has never been higher, this age group faces challenges related to ageism, suffering from prejudiced attitudes and discriminatory practices. In this context, the media play an important role in constructing, perpetuating and/or challenging stereotypes related to this stage of life, and children are especially sensitive to the images conveyed by the media. Animated films are a privileged content for children and can have a strong influence on the way children understand the world, namely the old people and the aging process. This research aimed to identify and analyze the representation of older people in the most watched animated films in Portugal, during the period from 2008 to 2018. Another aim of the study was to ascertain whether animated films had the potential to influence children's perception and comprehension of the elderly population and the aging process. Moreover, the research sought to develop a comprehensive set of guidelines to be implemented in action programs, with the purpose of promoting a constructive and authentic understanding of the older adults and the aging process. To achieve the research objectives, an analysis was conducted on the portrayal of older individuals in the most watched animated films in Portugal. The analysis utilized a modified analysis grid that was developed based on previous related studies. Following the viewing of three selected films, focus group sessions and interviews were conducted with children between the ages of 6 and 12. This study unveiled a notable underrepresentation of older individuals and a significant dearth of diversity in their portrayal, particularly concerning gender and race. Despite the generally positive depiction of characters in their later stages of life, featuring natural attributes of aging such as wrinkles and gray hair, these characters were often associated with irrelevant roles and were often shown in a negative light, with overall negative and positive evaluations evenly distributed. The children expressed predominantly negative responses towards the physical attributes of older characters, while displaying more positive attitudes towards their psychological dimensions. Older characters with prominent roles and mentoring positions garnered more positive responses. Negative responses were more commonly observed among older children and those who had limited exposure to older individuals. The development of this research highlights the importance of diversifying the representation of older individuals, considering their different experiences and heterogeneity. It is recommended to include people of different age groups in relevant roles and maintain a balance in portraying characters of various genders and races. Stereotypes and prejudices about aging should be identified and addressed through educational programs and intergenerational activities, emphasizing the continued need to invest in actions that promote a positive, diverse, and realistic view of the aging process. |
