This study examines the impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on financial markets, focusing on 102 energy sector companies listed on Euronext. Historical evidence shows that extreme events, such as geopolitical conflicts, typically affect financial markets, causing uncertainty and volatility in stock markets. The European Union, which imports energy from Russia, is particularly vulnerable to the Russian-Ukrainian war and its potential consequences. Through preliminary analysis, the application of the Chow test, the utilization of the Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) machine learning model, and the evaluation of its forecasting performance, this study suggests that the Russian invasion on Ukrainian territory has not significantly affected the financial markets of the selected energy sector companies. The EU’s swift response in seeking alternative sources of energy supply and implementing strategic decisions may have mitigated potential effects of this war. Nevertheless, this analysis remains relevant for guiding economic policies and investment decisions in the context of geopolitical events. |
