The smartphone is a tool that sees widespread use in times of rest and work, including inside the classroom and during studying, even though several studies have shown a link between the habit and decreased academic performance (Adler & Benbunan-Fich, 2013; le Roux et al., 2021; Limniou, 2021; Patterson, 2017; Troll et al., 2021). Even though research in this area has been abundantly growing, there is a lack of investigation when it comes to environments involving music practice. This investigation sought to fill this gap, by looking into University of Aveiro’s first- and second-year music students’ digital habits during music practice, in conjunction with their opinion on the matter. This study sought to use both a quantitative (through the use of a survey) and qualitative (through the use of several interviews) methodology. The study found that the habit is present in the music practice of most participants and with a high degree of frequency. Furthermore, it also found that one of the factors that most motivated the habit was to escape practice and its frustrations. |
