This work was supported by FEDER - COMPETE 2020 under the project plug- PON (ref. POCI-01-0247-FEDER-047221). Due to the great demand for higher and higher transmission rates, technologies based on PON (Passive Optical Network) architectures have undergone enormous development in recent years and are currently the most used in access networks. With the emergence of the fifth generation of mobile networks (5G), new challenges have arisen for PON networks, such as: increased transmission rate, cost minimization and coexistence with previous technologies. In this context, a new standard, 25G-PON, was developed. Subsequently, this dissertation focuses on the characterization and optimization of 25 Gbit/s transceivers, which use different types of modulation, namely, EML (Externally Modulated Laser) and DML (Directly Modulated Laser) . Thus, it was intended to understand the limits and advantages of each option. Additionally, experimental tests were carried out in NG-PON2 and in 25G-PON, with the objective of comparing the performance of a technology that is already in operation (as is the case of NG-PON2) with a technology that is still in use. its testing phase (as is the case with 25G-PON). This work demonstrates the feasibility of transmitters that make use of direct modulation, which, with a much lower production cost, are able to reach the values required by the standard. It was also possible to demonstrate the feasibility of using O-band wavelengths (band where downstream and upstream transmission occurs in 25G-PON). Two XFP (10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable) type transceivers were also experimentally characterized in NG-PON2 and two SFP28 (Small Form Factor Pluggable 28) type transceivers in 25G-PON. Additionally, several ROSAs (Receiver Optical Sub Assembly) were characterized and optimized, all of them with an APD type receiver (Avalanche Photo-Diode) in their constitution. |
