Amato Lusitano, Garcia Lopes e as propriedades terapêuticas da romã

Abstract

Em 1553, o médico cristão-novo João Rodrigues de Castelo Branco, que ficou conhecido como Amato Lusitano, publica as Enarrationes, a segunda obra dedicada ao estudo do tratado De materia medica de Dioscórides. O albicastrense consagra a enarratio 138 do livro primeiro à tipificação da romã (malum punicum) e à descrição das suas propriedades curativas. Pouco depois, o tema haveria de ser retomado por Garcia Lopes, outro médico de origem hebraica, num dos 27 capítulos (o cap. 4) que compõem a única obra que se lhe conhece, dada à estampa em Antuérpia no ano de 1564, sob o título Commentarii de uaria rei medicae lectione. A reflexão que aqui trazemos sobre as faculdades e usos terapêuticos da romã, e que assenta, como sugere o título do nosso trabalho, no confronto entre os comentários de Amato e os de Garcia Lopes, permitir-nos-á, por um lado, identificar os elementos da tradição incorporados por cada autor na sua própria descrição e, por outro, compreender em que medida o albicastrense, citado pelo médico de Portalegre, se afigura como uma autoridade ou um mestre a seguir.

In 1553, the New Christian physician João Rodrigues de Castelo Branco, who became known as Amatus Lusitanus, published the Enarrationes, the second work he devoted to the study of Dioscorides' treatise De materia medica. The physician devotes enarratio 138 of book 1 to the typification of the pomegranate (malum punicum) and to the description of its healing properties. Shortly after, the theme was to be taken up by Garcias Lopius, another physician of Jewish origin, in one of the 27 chapters (chapter 4) which constitute his only known work, printed in Antwerp in 1564, under the title Commentarii de uaria rei medicae lectione. The reflection that we bring here on the faculties and the therapeutic uses of the pomegranate, which is based, as the title of our work suggests, on the confrontation between the words of Amatus and Garcias Lopius, will allow us, on one hand, to identify the elements of tradition incorporated by each author in his own description and, on the other hand, to understand to what extent the physician from Castelo Branco, cited by Garcias Lopius, appears as an authority or a master to follow.
