Abstract: | A subpopulação de tartaruga de couro (Dermochelys coriacea) do Noroeste do
maior do mundo.
encontram no ninho.
The subpopulation of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, in which the Caribbean is included, is the second largest in the world. Their protection is extremely important. To know what measures to adopt for their protection, a more concrete characterization of this population is necessary. The leatherback turtle population is at risk as it has the lowest hatching success of the sea turtle species. And of all species, this is the largest one. There are several threats to the success of this species while they are still in the nest. Poachers, predation by various animals, climate change, the fact that they are the species that has the greatest tendency to make their nests closer to the waterline and can be destroyed, are some of the examples that threaten success of this population. The present work, in one hand, aims to characterize the nesting population of leatherback turtles in Playa Tres, Parismina, located on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, during its 2021 season. On the other hand, it aims to find the justification for the low hatching success associated with hers clutch. One of the hypotheses, for the low hatching rate, is associated with the temperature and humidity that the nests are subjected to during incubation. These parameters (temperature and humidity) were measured along the beach and over 3 months. It is important to highlight the following data. Nesting female had an average Curved Carapace Length (CCL) of 153,2 ± 6,7 cm. Nesting success was 78%. Hatching success was 63,8 ± 26,4%. The average clutch size was 81,6 ± 18,0 eggs per nest. The incubation period was 64,5 ± 3,1 days. Sand temperature ranged between 26,5 ± 0,7ºC and 29,2 ± 0,7ºC. The sand moisture ranged between 6,5 ± 1,5% and 11,3 ± 3,5%. Despite the short period of time, the proposed aims were fulfilled. However, it is imperative to carry out more studies because there are still parameters that are not evaluated. |
