A escolha do nome próprio: quadro legal e evolução da antroponímia contemporânea em Portugal

Abstract

As mudanças sociológicas têm motivado alterações nas práticas de atribuição de nomes próprios em Portugal. A evolução da onomástica é complexa de descrever, pois não há inventários exaustivos dos nomes dos cidadãos. Neste trabalho, explicamos o quadro legal da escolha e composição do nome e analisamos casos de nomes recusados ao longo do século XX, como indicadores de mudanças em curso. Por fim, apontamos os principais focos de mudança para a próxima década, que previsivelmente passarão pelo aumento de nomes estrangeiros e formas adaptadas, com previsíveis interferências no sistema ortográfico e na separação entre nomes marcadamente masculinos e femininos.

The evolution of onomastics is complex to describe, as there are no comprehensive inventories of modern Portuguese names. In this paper, we explain the legal framework for the choice and composition of first names and analyse cases of names refused throughout the 20th century, which are indicators of ongoing changes. Finally, we point to predictable changes for the next decade, such as the increase in foreign names and adapted forms, with interference in the spelling system and in the separation between male and female names.
