Representações estereotipadas de género: um estudo de livros chineses para a infância

Abstract

Para as crianças, os livros ilustrados infantis são uma forma de entender o mundo e aprender as regras sociais. Do mesmo modo, os estereótipos de género contidos nos livros infantis podem ser absorvidos pelas crianças. Por um lado, desempenham um papel educativo, para que as crianças possam satisfazer as expectativas e o reconhecimento cultural. Por outro lado, permitem que os conceitos tradicionais de género e a desigualdade de género continuem a permanecer entre a nova geração, limitando as habilidades e o desenvolvimento delas. Contudo, os efeitos negativos dos estereótipos de género podem ainda ser mais profundos. No entanto, este problema não atraiu atenção suficiente no sistema educacional e no mercado do livro. Desde a fundação da República Popular da China, as mulheres chinesas têm lutado pelo direito ao trabalho e à independência. A maioria das mulheres chinesas passam da família para a sociedade, mas, na realidade, a desigualdade de género ainda está presente na sociedade chinesa atual. A sociedade tem ainda conceitos de género e sexo frágeis e ambíguos. Vários estudos chineses e estrangeiros mostraram que os estereótipos de género continuam a se fortalecer com o crescimento da idade de uma criança, o que gerou uma série de desigualdades sociais notáveis e já evoluem para problemas sociais. Neste trabalho, selecionei 22 livros ilustrados infantis chineses, aplicando as dimensões de estereótipos de género propostas por Deaux e Lewis (1984): traços de personalidade, comportamento de papel, profissão e aparência física. Neste trabalho abordei as questões seguintes: Existem estereótipos de género nos livros ilustrados infantis chineses? Os livros ilustrados infantis originais da China são portadores de estereótipos de género? Como os traços de personalidade, o papel de comportamento, a profissão e a aparência dos estereótipos de género são refletidos nos livros ilustrados infantis chineses? Como os estereótipos de género se manifestam nos textos destes livros? Como as ilustrações nos livros ilustrados infantis chineses refletem os estereótipos de género? Por fim, concluí que existem estereótipos de género distintos nos textos e nas imagens nesses 22 livros ilustrados infantis chineses.

For kids, children's picture books are a way to understand the world around them and learn basic social rules. Likewise, gender stereotypes contained in children's books can be absorbed by children. On the one hand, they play an educational role, so that children can meet expectations and cultural recognition. On the other hand, they allow traditional concepts of gender and gender inequality to remain among the new generation, limiting their skills and development. However, the negative effects of gender stereotypes may be even more profound. Despite its extreme relevance, this problem has not attracted enough attention in the educational system and in the publishing market. Since People's Republic of China foundation, chinese women have been fighting for the right to work and their independence. Most of them move from the family into society, but gender inequality is still clear in chinese society today. Chinese Society still has a fragile and an ambiguous concept of gender and sex. Several chinese and foreign studies have shown that gender stereotypes continue to strengthen with a child's age, which has created a series of notable social inequalities and is already evolving into social problems. In this study, were selected 22 Chinese children's picture books, applying the dimensions of gender stereotypes proposed by Deaux and Lewis (1984): personality traits, role behavior, job, and physical appearance. In this study I addressed the following questions: Are the original children's picture books from China carrying gender stereotypes? Does gender stereotypes in Chinese children's picture books continue to exist? How are personality traits, role behavior, occupation and appearance of gender stereotypes reflected in Chinese children's picture books? How do gender stereotypes manifest in the texts of these books? How do the illustrations in Chinese children's picture books reflect gender stereotypes? Finally, it was concluded that there are distinct gender stereotypes in the texts and images of those 22 Chinese children's picture books selected.
