quente e fria (Verão e Inverno austrais, respetivamente). As precipitações diminuem
A Corrente
A interação
Fridtjof
a distribuição horizontal e vertical do oxigénio dissolvido.
The coast of Angola is located between the tropical and the subtropical regions of the West African coast, between latitudes 5° S (Cabinda) and 17° 15' S (Cunene). It is about 1650 km long and has two well-defined main seasons, called hot and cold (austral summer and winter, respectively). Precipitations gradually decreases from North to South, under the influence of the Southeast trade winds. The warm Angolan current, consisting of a narrow flow between the surface and about 250 m on the continental margin, flows south and is fed by the eastward transport of the equatorial currents. In the south, is located the Benguela Current system that flows in the equatorward direction, as a result of the forcing from the (upwelling favourable) trade winds. The interaction between these two systems results in the Angola - Benguela frontal system. Large-scale historical observations exist, but a scarce number of studies are devoted to the Angolan margin. Based on the data historically collected by the R/V "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen" as part of the Nansen programme between 1984 - 2014 made available by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), it was possible to carry out a study of the hydrography and currents associated with two oceanographic cruises carried out in the warm (March) and cold (August) seasons during those years. After a review of the bibliography and a historical framework, a consistent study is made on the analysis of surface satellite data of different physical parameters (SST, SSS, SLA) to highlight the remote forcing mechanisms through equatorial Kelvin waves (IEKW) among others. The climatology of the Angolan continental margin is described on the basis of the available in situ data (1994 - 2014), previously analysed, in order to characterise it in terms of climatological mean values. Subsequently, by comparison with climatological values, anomalies in relation to climatology are calculated and analysed, in order to identify extreme years, hot and cold, which are studied in detail in a chapter dedicated to the analysis of representative extreme year sections by comparison with the climatological sections previously described. At the same time as the classical hydrological conditions, the horizontal and vertical distribution of dissolved oxygen was studied. Regions with low oxygen values associated with central waters (hypoxia) were identified, as well as the transition regions with the surface, and the main mechanisms explaining the upwelling of low dissolved oxygen waters towards the surface layers. |
