A importância do bilinguismo e multilinguismo no contexto empresarial

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo, através de revisão da literatura especializada, da importância do bilinguismo e do multilinguismo no contexto empresarial. O bilinguismo e o multilinguismo estão a tornar-se cada vez mais importantes numa sociedade na qual as pessoas estão mais móveis e etnicamente conscientes. Nem o bilinguismo, nem o multilinguismo são fenómenos raros ou únicos no mundo moderno, ao contrário da crença popular, sendo fenómenos naturais em todo o mundo. Ao longo do estudo, pretendeu-se compreender, com base na literatura analisada, não só a importância do bilinguismo/multilinguismo no contexto empresarial, como também a interligação entre o conceito de globalização e o bilinguismo e multilinguismo, bem como eventuais oportunidades e benefícios para empresas e organizações através da contratação de colaboradores bilingues e/ou multilingues. Desta forma o contributo deste trabalho foca-se em compreender se, em um contexto global empresarial, o conhecimento de uma língua estrangeira apenas chega ou não para uma comunicação eficaz e efetiva. Assim, a realização do estudo permitiu confirmar a importância fundamental das competências em línguas para o bom funcionamento de uma empresa e, como resultado, para o seu crescimento. A formação dos seus trabalhadores, não só noutras línguas, como também a nível cultural e comunicativo, torna-se, portanto, uma componente crítica e fulcral para a empresa, tanto a nível externo como interno. Desta forma, quando a língua, a cultura e a comunicação são combinadas num contexto empresarial, podem resultar numa comunicação rápida, eficaz e eficiente com parceiros internacionais, poupando, assim, tempo não só para a corporação, mas também para os empregados e partes interessadas, facilitando e auxiliando a compreensão das diferenças entre os indivíduos, grupos e organizações.

The objective of this dissertation was to study, through a review of specialized literature, the importance of bilingualism and multilingualism in the business context. Bilingualism and multilingualism are becoming increasingly important in a society where people are more and more mobile and ethnically aware. Bilingualism and multilingualism are not rare or unique phenomena in the modern world, contrary to popular belief, constituting natural phenomena all over the world. The study aimed to understand, based of the literature analysed throughout the project, not only the importance of bilingualism/multilingualism in the business context, but also the interconnection between the concept of globalization and bilingualism and multilingualism, as well as possible opportunities and benefits for companies and organizations of hiring bilingual and/or multilingual employees. Thus the contribution of this work focuses on understanding whether, in a global business context, knowledge of just one foreign language is enough for efficient and effective communication. Thus, the study confirmed the fundamental importance of language skills for the proper functioning of a company and, as a result, for its growth. The training of its employees, not only in other languages, but also on a cultural and communicative level, becomes, therefore, a critical and essential component for the company, both externally and internally. In this way, when language, culture and communication are combined in a business context, they can result in fast, effective and efficient communication with international partners, thus saving time not only for the corporation, but also for employees and stakeholders, facilitating and helping to understand the differences between individuals, groups and organizations.
