O outro
No cyberball
The present work is a research project proposal. The main goal of the project is to explore the involvement of memory in the interference of the behavioral immune system (BIS), using cyberball, as a way to activate in the participants concerns about contamination situations. When faced with sources of contamination. Humans react through biological responses (biological immune system) and psychological responses (BIS). The BIS works as a first-line defence mechanism on the combat to possible pathogens that can reach our bodies. One of the main components of the BIS is the emotion is disgust, which is a predictor of behaviour and cognitions. Sensitivity to disgust is an individual characteristic and can be measured using self-report instruments. The other component of the BIS are cognitions, namely memory. Previous studies have shown that we remember more objects that we considered as sources of contamination than neutral objects, an effect that has been related do the BIS. In the present study we propose to activate the BIS through an online procedure called cyberball. It consists on a ball-tossing game where three or more players can participate and we are able to manipulate how they interact with each other. Two group will be created, the control group where healthy faces and neutral descriptors will be used to represent the players, and the experimental group where these players are represented by faces and descriptors related to contamination cues, the experimental group is intended to cause the desired activation of the SIC. Since sensitivity to disgust is an individual characteristic that may influence our study, this will be measured using the “Disgust Sensitivity Scale - Revised”. The procedure involves filling out an emotional questionnaire to assess the participants emotional state before and after the cyberball, which will be the second task of the procedure. The memory task for objects would follow and, finally, the filling of disgust sensitivity scale. We expect the results to be in line with the literature, namely, to obtain better recall of objects that represent sources of contamination compared to neutral objects, replicating the contamination mnemonic effect. Additionally, we predict that this effect will be influenced by the previous experience in cyberball where we activate concerns about contamination, with the effect being more pronounced in the experimental group compared to the control group. Finally, such effect might be amplified in those participants with higher disgust sensitivity. |
