As múltiplas vozes da literatura no ensino de inglês

Abstract

A importância que a Língua Inglesa assume na comunicação a nível mundial nos dias de hoje é evidente. Daí advém também a importância crescente de um ensino da língua que resulte na possibilidade de comunicar com o outro. No entanto, não podemos dissociar uma língua das suas raízes culturais e literárias, sob o risco de a esvaziarmos de conteúdo. Estas componentes que definem a língua não devem ser ignoradas nas aulas de Inglês. Neste sentido é fundamental perceber o papel que a literatura de expressão Inglesa pode desempenhar no ensino de Inglês, não só como fonte de cultura e diversidade, mas também como factor de motivação para os alunos. É intuito desta dissertação aprofundar a questão do papel que é atribuído actualmente à literatura no ensino de Inglês, mais concretamente em escolas secundárias localizadas na zona de Aveiro, através da análise de documentos oficiais e das experiências de professores e alunos. Espero assim poder contribuir para uma nova visão do uso da literatura nas aulas de Inglês, atribuindo especial relevo a uma literatura multicultural rica e diversa

ABSTRACT: The importance of the English Language in world communication nowadays is evident. Therefore, there is a growing interest in an English teaching that will result in the possibility of communicating with others. Nonetheless, we cannot dissociate a language from its cultural and literary roots, under the risk of emptying it of its contents. These components that define the language should not be ignored in the English lessons. This way it is fundamental to understand the role that English literature may play in the teaching of English, not only as a source of culture and diversity, but also as a factor of motivation for the students. It is a purpose of this dissertation to deepen the question of the role given nowadays to literature in the teaching of English, specifically in secondary schools located in the surroundings of Aveiro, through the analysis of official documents and through the experiences of teachers and students. I hope that this way I can have a say on a new vision of the use of literature in English lessons, putting a highlight on a rich and diverse multicultural literature.
