The transition from preschool education to the elementary school is the object of study of this research and intends to characterize the socio-emotional development of children, as well as identify the feelings, competences and Difficulties of the children during the transition, and the facilitating strategies for the transition promoted in a group of schools in the district of Aveiro, Portugal. Children, parents and professors from both educational levels participated in this study. Qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) were used, and content analysis was performed using the WebQDA and non-parametric analysis, using SPSS. The main results indicate that children feel happiness and satisfaction with the transition process, but also anxiety. Regarding socio-emotional development, in the perception of parents and teachers, the children of the elementary school present more difficulties than the children of the preschool education group, who have more competencies. It is also perceived that the school group promotes, as strategies facilitating the transition, visits to the elementary school and the dynamics of sponsorship, although poorly consistent in order to promote the socio-emotional development of children |
