Abstract: | Este trabalho teve como principal objectivo a caracterização geoquímica e
Águeda e a Ribeira do Teixo.
CXG mais expressivo nestas amostras This main objective of this work was the geochemical and isotopic characterization of water samples and sediments of two main watercourses that drain the Caramulo Massif. The Caramulo region lies in the transition between Beira Alta and Beira Litoral, in the western central part of the Portuguese territory, and is part of the Central Iberian Zone. The sector under study is dominated by an important sin- to post- D3 variscan intrusion, the Caramulo Pluton, which intruded the metasediments of Neoproterozoic / Lower Cambrian age (belonging to the Beiras Group of the Complexo Xisto-Grauváquico - CXG). Sampling was performed along two watercourses and their tributaries: the Águeda River and the Teixo Stream. The spring of Águeda river is located in an area composed by metasediments of the CXG and only further ahead it crosses the plutonite. In contrast, the spring of Teixo Stream is located in the granite massif and circulates through this granite before crossing the western boundary of the intrusion, again with the metasediments of the CXG. The hydrochemical and isotopic data (87Sr/86Sr) of surface waters draining the Caramulo Granite Massif showed that their compositions were essentially controlled by the interaction between meteoric waters and the silicate rocks of the substratum, in which the hydrolysis reactions of plagioclase and biotite have played a dominant role in this process. Two other sources, contributing to the chemistry of these waters (namely Cl- and Na+ ions), were marine inputs, originating from aerosols transported from the Atlantic coast, and the of anthropogenic contributions (agricultural fertilizers). The differences observed in the water chemistry of the two watercourses suggests that the Águeda River had a quite greater influence from biotite and from plagioclase with more calcic compositions than the Teixo Stream. Rainier periods seem to favor the dissolution of minerals through a greater water-rock interaction, while drier periods expose more the anthropogenic contributions through evapotranspiration effects. The mineralogical and geochemical data of the stream sediments showed the contributions of the granitic and metasedimentary rocks crossed by the watercourses, and allowed to corroborate the interpretations made for the sources of the dissolved elements in the surface waters. The variability in the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios of the stream sediments suggests the mixing, in different proportions, of materials from the two types of sources. The sediments of Teixo stream have higher isotopic ratios, reflecting a greater granitic influence, while the lower ratios in the sediments of Águeda river indicate a more significant contribution of the metasediments (CXG) in these samples |
