Abstract: | O reconhecimento da importância do papel da História da Ciência no
desta importância, entendeu-se pertinente investigar: i) qual a ênfase e a
The recognition of the importance of the role of the History of Science in science teaching dates back to the ends of the century XIX. Many have been the researchers, educators in science and associations dedicated to science teaching, that have been in favour of the integration of the “History of Science” component in science teaching. Based on this recognition it was considered relevant to investigate: i) which are the emphasis and intention that the syllabus of Basic and Secondary Education give to the integration of the “History of Science” component in science teaching and which strategies are suggested in that direction; ii) which are teachers’ conceptions about the inclusion of this component in their strategies in the classroom; iii) which are teachers’ competences to use this historical approach in their teaching; and iv) how are teachers’ practices concerning the integration of this component in their teaching. A study structured in three phases was developed with that purpose: a first phase was developed aiming to investigate the emphasis that physics and chemistry syllabus for the Secondary and Basic Education give to the inclusion of the “History of Science” component; a second one, was developed aiming to investigate physics and chemistry teachers’ conceptions about the inclusion of that component in their teaching; and finally, a third phase was developed aiming to investigate teachers’ practices related to its inclusion in their teaching. The investigation done with the syllabus and with teachers was framed in the dimension of analysis “History of Science” and the analysis’ categories used have been justified in the literature. The results of this study reveal that the syllabus recognises the importance of the “History of Science” component in the teaching of science. However, it is in the syllabus of the Secondary Education that the references to that component appear in larger quantity and with better quality. Indicators that show that the teachers involved in the second phase of the study recognise the importance of this component in their physics teaching were also obtained. Nevertheless, they recognise also that it appeals very little to them, due to their lack of knowledge of the subject and to the lack of suggestions in the syllabus. The results of the study also reveal that teachers of the third phase do not make any type of historical approach during the teaching of a concept, which corroborates data from other studies, namely that teachers say not always correspond to what they do in practice. From the results of the study it seems important to emphasise the introduction of the “History of Science” component in the curricula of the initial formation of science teachers as well as the realisation of workshops that may helping service teachers to develop and implement strategies involving this component, facilitator of learning. It is important and urgent to invest in teacher formation in order to promote a better students’ learning, which is vital for the education of the future generations. |
